MCCD’s origins extend back to 1982, when a group of eight non-profit developers met to discuss their common issues and concerns. The regular meetings that followed led the group to develop a strategy that ultimately produced over a thousand low- and moderate-income housing units in Minneapolis. The group also focused on public education efforts and encouraged program collaboration among members. In 1989, the group, which had grown to eleven members, incorporated the Minneapolis Consortium of Nonprofit Developers as a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation. In 1993, the name was changed to the Minneapolis Consortium of Community Developers (MCCD).

Soon after incorporation MCCD began its multi-neighborhood, micro-loan program with a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation and support from the Minneapolis Community Development Agency (MCDA). A number of members consolidated their individual loan assets to create a consolidated loan fund. This provided for a more efficient, centrally managed loan program that allowed the members to focus on their business clients. In 2007, MCCD merged with the St. Paul Coalition for Community Development and changed its name to the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers.

Today, MCCD’s membership, with 48 members, is committed to increasing opportunities for the development of quality, community-based projects through collaborative action on public policy issues, loan fund development, public education efforts, and long-term strategic planning. Through these efforts, MCCD has been able to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiencies gained by a shared vision and cooperation.
