Week Seven: Homeless Youth Acts Moves Forward

Week Seven of the 2013 Legislative Session

This week was a big one for supporters of the Homeless Youth Act (SF 565/HF 698).  Part of the overall Homes For All ask, it was introduced this week as a standalone bill. Introducing the bill this way will allow the Homeless Youth Act to have its own hearing about the unique issues faced by homeless youth, and allows supporters to rally around this important need.  The funding in the Homeless Youth Act will support the services side of homeless youth.  The Homeless Youth Act will support funding for:

  • Street Outreach and drop-in programs
  • Emergency Shelters and services
  • Supportive Housing and Transitional Living Programs including services and rental assistance

The Homeless Youth Act held a press conference before the bill’s first hearing in the House Early Childhood and Youth Development Policy Committee where youth advocates were joined by our coalition partners testifying in support of the bill.

Following the press conference, there were several mentions of the bill in the local media. Some of the articles we saw included:

MPR News

Star Tribune

Burnsville Patch

There was also quite a lot of buzz on Twitter (tweets collected via Storify by PORTICO).
